Social security

Whether or not you register a civil partnership, you will be affected by the new law if you are a same sex couple who live together and one of you is receiving benefits or tax credits. Same sex couples will be treated in the same way as heterosexual couples who are not married and not as two independent people as they have been in the past. Household income will be assessed jointly so entitlement to benefits may be reduced or end completely. This could have a serious financial impact for some couples.
