Personal Privacy
It is uncomfortable for anyone to feel that their private life is under public scrutiny, but it can be particularly unpleasant to have your sexual orientation in focus. Bindmans specialises in protecting individuals from unwarranted intrusions into their private and family life, whether by their employer, by organisations which regulate employment, or by the media. We provide a friendly and supportive service to gay and lesbian clients in difficult circumstances.
Changes to the rules on disclosing old convictions and cautions may mean some people are asked to reveal these for the first time. This can be particularly difficult for those with disclosures relating to sexual activities. If you are asked to disclose details to an employer who may not otherwise be aware of them, we can advise on what must be disclosed and what can remain private.
Similarly your right to respect for your private life could be undermined by a request to disclose your medical records if they reveal details of your sexual health. Bindmans has experience of working with clients to protect their privacy in these circumstances.
A growing part of our work is in supporting clients faced with media intrusion into their private lives. Sometimes news reporting goes beyond that which is legitimately in the public interest and this can be very uncomfortable for lesbian and gay people coming under scrutiny.
The law in this area can be complex. With our combined experience in human rights, defamation and family law we work to ensure fair treatment for lesbian and gay clients and their families.
