Discrimination at work

It is unlawful to discriminate against lesbian and gay people in any aspect of employment. Bindmans have experience of acting in cases in this field, as well as of advising gay businesses. Following the introduction of civil partnership, employers are being advised by the Government that employees in a civil partnership should be treated equally to married employees - any benefits available to spouses should also be made available to civil partners.

They are also advised that there should not be a completely separate process for employees to claim benefits in relation to their civil partnership. Existing benefit packages for spouses should be re-labelled as benefits for ‘spouses or civil partners’ to avoid the need for someone to identify themselves as having either a spouse or a civil partner.
